Cardosas is a parish in the municipality of Arruda dos Vinhos, district of Lisbon. It is located to the east of the county seat, about 4 kilometers from it.
The parish has an area of 6.01 km2 and has 836 inhabitants (according to the 2011 census), distributed among the places of Cardosas, Pocariças, Casal Não-Há, Horta dos Velhos, Rondulha, Palmeiro, Baixa do Linhô, Fonte Nova, Cruzamento das Cardosas, Rossio das Cardosas and Vale-Flores.
The toponym "Cardosas" derives from the Latin "cardosus" which means "land where thistles abound.
Through information filed in the tower of the tombo it can be seen that Cardosas was a branch of the parish of Our Lady of Salvation of the village of Arruda, from which it was detached by Apostolic Bulls in 1562, giving creation to the region of S. Miguel das Cardosas.
In the eighteenth century, Cardosas was a curacy presented annually to the people on Easter Sunday. The curate won a congrua of sixty-two bushels of olive oil, a barrel of wine in must, two pitchers of oil and seven thousand réis in cash.
In the earthquake of November 1, 1755, it is said that Cardosas was the least affected place in the district of Lisbon, having only shaken some tiles of the church, fallen some bricks of the Cross and there were cracks in the Bell Tower and the Sacristy.
Subsequently, over a period of twenty years, there were several changes in relation to the county to which it belonged. In 1877 it became part of the Municipality of Sobral de Monte Agraço, in 1890 it was again part of Arruda dos Vinhos, in 1895 it was part of the Municipality of Vila Franca de Xira and, in 1897, it became definitively part of the Municipality of Arruda dos Vinhos.
Although the creation of the parish dates back to the sixteenth century, there are indications that our locality was inhabited many years before having as a reference point a bridge with Roman characteristics located over the Ribeira das Cardosinhas.
Saint Michael the Archangel is the patron saint of the Parish of Cardosas who, on the third weekend of September, is celebrated through the annual festivities in his honor.
The date of the foundation of the parish church is not known for sure, it is only known that in 1562, the date of the foundation of the parish, the church already existed, and it was built by the residents of the parish. The church has a single nave and has three altars.
In the parish there are three fountains where, in the past, residents used to drink, the Clérigos Fountain, the Ireira Fountain and the Baixo Fountain.
There were also nine farms, the main one being Quinta da Sardinha. There were also Quinta do Loureiro, Quinta do Outeiro, Quinta de Henrique da Cunha e Ataíde, Quinta do Palmeiro, Quinta da Caldeira, Quinta de Val de Flores, Quinta das Caldeiras and Quinta do Mato Sobral.
