Bairrada Wine Region
The Bairrada Region, located on the Beira Litoral, between Aveiro and Coimbra, in the heart of Portugal, is a flat region that develops along the maritime strip, and its climate is typically Atlantic, with mild and rainy winters and summers softened by the winds from the sea.
Wine production in Bairrada has been documented since at least the Roman period, but more concrete testimonies only emerged in the Middle Ages.
It was with the production of red wine that Bairrada came to be recognized as a wine region par excellence, however, white wines have been assuming an important role, especially in the production of natural sparkling wines, in which Bairrada was a pioneer in Portugal.
The creation of sparkling wines took place more than 120 years ago, with the influence of the French, who transmitted to the region the knowledge of the champagne method, today officially called the classic or bottle fermentation method. Despite its history, the recognition of the Bairrada region as a demarcated wine region only became official in 1979. Bairrada wines, rich and full of soul, portray the bountiful land from which they come in a surprising variety for a single region.
The predominant grape variety is Baga. It is a good producer of grapes but late in ripening. It produces wines that are intense in colour, full-bodied, tannin and somewhat harsh.
Among the white grape varieties, Maria Gomes is the main one. Of good production, it is tempered and should be harvested early. The wines of this variety are alcoholic but not very acidic, with a pronounced aroma and soft in the mouth.
This area offers a wine tasting with tradition.
